Is Travel Insurance Mandatory for UK Student Visa?
No, travel insurance is not a mandatory requirement for a UK Student visa. The UK government’s official list of Student visa documents does not include a private travel insurance policy. However, most international students must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of their visa application.
What Is the Immigration Health Surcharge?
The IHS is different from travel insurance. It allows eligible visa holders to access the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) broadly on the same basis as UK residents for the duration of their permitted stay.
As of 2026, the IHS rate for students is £776 per year, with the total amount depending on the length of the visa. Applicants generally have to pay the surcharge even if they already have private medical insurance.
The IHS does not make every healthcare service free. Students may still have to pay standard charges for services such as:
- Prescriptions
- Dental treatment
- Eye tests
Should UK Students Still Buy Travel Insurance?
You don't need any additional insurance for the student visa, but it can be useful. The IHS is mainly about access to NHS healthcare. It doesn’t offer the same travel protection a travel insurance policy does.
Depending on the plan, student travel insurance can cover trip cancelation or interruption, travel delays, lost baggage, emergency medical evacuation, repatriation, and some medical expenses.
Student Coverage with Travelner Insurance
Travelner Insurance allows international students to compare and purchase student insurance plans online. The policies available offer a range of combinations of medical, trip, and emergency benefits depending on the coverage you select.
In short, travel insurance is optional for a UK Student visa, while the IHS is generally compulsory for eligible Student visa applicants. Private insurance can complement—but does not replace—the IHS requirement.

What Does Travel Insurance on Student Universe Cost?
Student travel insurance costs vary according to:
- How much protection you desire. You will spend more if you select a health insurance plan with a higher policy maximum. It will cost considerably more if you add coverage for "add-ons" that are optional, like liability.
- The location you are going to. Due to the extremely high cost of healthcare, travel insurance for the US, for instance, is more expensive than in most other nations.
- how long you need to have insurance. It will cost more to purchase travel insurance for a month than for only two weeks.
